Current Road Construction Projects in Clay County

Branan Field Chaffee Road (State Road 23) – Installing a 6-foot tall fence on both sides of roadway from Blanding Boulevard (State Road 21) to 300 feet north of Kendlewood Drive. Safety Contractors, Inc., began November 12, 2004 at a cost of $646,247.48. Jessica Reese/project engineer. (208225-8)

State Road 16 -- Resurfacing from the beginning of the four-lane at Kingsley Lake to State Road 21 (5.6 miles). Anderson Columbia Company of Lake City began April 12, 2004 and should finish in 285 days (early 2005) at a cost of $3,610,400.00. State Road 16 – Resurfacing from State Road 21 to U.S. 17 in Green Cove Springs (13.4 miles). Also, add turn lanes at Clay County Fairgrounds. State Road 21 – Resurfacing from the Putnam County line to State Road 100 in Keystone Heights (6.2 miles). V.E. Whitehurst & Sons, Inc., of Williston began April 19, 2005 and should finish in 210 days (late 2005) at a cost of $3,430,989.56 (combined with Bradford County resurfacing job). U.S. 17 – Resurface between State Road 16 and Governor’s Creek (1.9 miles). Bids were opened July 20, 2005 and the apparent low bidder was J.B. Clay County -- Added sidewalks in various locations around schools including on Mederia Drive from Blairmore Boulevard to Edson Drive; on Everett Avenue (CR 220) from State Road 21 (Blanding Boulevard) to Scenic Drive; and on Doctor’s Lake Drive (CR 224A) from Woodveil Lane to Admirals Walk Drive East, for a total of 2.1 miles. The Everett Avenue sidewalk included a timber bridge. Haynes & Son, Inc., of McAlpin began Feb. 2, 2004 and finished Jan. 21, 2005 at a cost of $482,395. (2115762)

Park Avenue (U.S. 17) -- Resurfaced from McIntosh Avenue to the Duval County line (3.8 miles). Hubbard Construction Company of Winter Park began Sept. 15, 2003 and finished Oct. 22, 2004 at a cost of $5,950,000.00. (2082281)

State Road 21 -- Resurfaced and added 5-foot paved shoulders from State Road 100 in Keystone Heights to State Road 16 at Camp Blanding (16.5 miles). APAC-Southeast, Inc., of Sarasota began September 29, 2003 and finished Dec. 21, 2004 at a cost of $4,867,941.00. (2082262)

College Avenue Extension (formerly known as the Cleveland Connector) – Study to look at new roadway between Blanding Boulevard (State Road 21) and Branan Field Chaffee Road (State Road 23) is underway by RS& H. David Anderson/FDOT project manager. (2082291)

River Crossing – Corridor study to determine the feasibility of connecting Branan Field - Chaffee Road (State Road 23) to the proposed I-95/State Road 9B interchange that would cross the St. Johns River at either the Shands Bridge or slightly north of Popo Point began in December 2002 and is expected to take two years to complete.
